Driving Information
    Road Rules

In Australia we drive on the left hand side of the road. The maximum speed limit in cities and towns is 60 km/h (35 mph) and 100 km/h (60 mph) on country roads and highways, unless signs indicate otherwise. Police regularly check motorists' speed with radar and camera devices.

We have strict drink-driving laws and random breath testing is conducted in all Australian States. Insurance is void if drivers exceed the legal alcohol limit (currently 0.05 ppm). It is compulsory for drivers and passengers to wear seatbelts at all times. Police in all States of Australia use radar and speed cameras to check the speed of motorists.

    Fuel Prices

Petrol in Australia comes in unleaded and leaded grades and is sold by the litre. Petrol and diesel fuel costs between 80 cents and 1 dollar per litre and can be higher especially in country and remote outback areas. Petrol stations however are plentiful, but again, close early in the country and remote areas, so maintaining a full fuel tank is essential in country areas. Most, if not all, service stations accept major credit cards, but often do not accept other cards, especially in the country areas. For up to date fuel prices, see Informed Sources

    Driver Licenses

All drivers must hold a current drivers licence (with an English translation shown on the licence) from their country of residence, or an International drivers permit. State laws stipulate that licences must be carried at all times when driving.

All customers are supplied with a street directory of the local area free of charge. There is a replacement fee if street directories are not returned.
